Dating from the 17th Century, this sandstone farmhouse with attached unconverted barn was in a parlous state when purchased by a private client. The brief had two distinct elements: firstly to embrace tradition and restore the sandstone farmhouse to its former glory and secondly to convert the barn into a contemporary living/office space. The challenge was to link a linear building on five different levels as well as creating a sense of unity between the traditional and modern elements. This was achieved through the insertion of a grand entrance hall at the heart of the property leading into a generously proportion dining/kitchen extension which was designed to capture the light and views to the rear of the house.
